After years of struggling with the intruders and hackers, viruses and spam, companies now are faced with a relatively new but potentially huge security issue, which is data leakage. By March 2008 the inadvertent exposure of confidential company information is already listed in the report, the number one threat to the security of data, and then viruses, Trojans and worms.
The report was published at the end of the year, and about 80% of responses in the survey agreed that data security and data protection against leakage is to get one of the biggest challenges that companies and even home users face. About 50% of the responses acknowledged that they had experienced an incident of data leakage in 2008.
This study found that intellectual property is the most common type of information leakage, and about 81% of the responses revealed that IPC data protection and management as an important part of their overall data protection strategy. Privacy and control or IPC can be defined as monitoring, encryption, filtering and blocking of confidential information contained in the data, stored data in motion and data in use.
According to the report, the highest priority solutions in the field of information protection and control (IPC) was the prevention of data leakage (DLP), which is currently deployed on the perimeter of the organization and the target computers.
The growing importance of preventing data leakage (DPL)
There are many reasons for the growing importance of preventing leakage of data to a level that it has been at the forefront of any enterprise security. Some reasons are listed below:
• High-profile, prestige and reputation of harmful data leaks
• Ghastly advertising data leakage
• Damage to reputation
• Loss of customers
• Sometimes leaks can even destroy the entire company
The number of well-advertised instances of security breaches of data is growing very rapidly. Financial institutions, government bodies, educational institutions, industrial giants and even presidential candidates – no one is safe from the cases of information leakage.
